Our People

Out of Many, One People

The true beauty of Jamaica is in its people. Our country is a melting pot of rich cultures, embodied by our national motto, “Out of Many, One People”. Our cultural diversity is a blend of Taíno, African, Indian, Spanish, Chinese, German, Portuguese, Syrian, Lebanese, English, Irish, French, and Welsh influences that you will see in our food, place names, architecture, music, dance, folklore, and language. As proud Jamaican people, we’re eager to immerse you in our ways—to show you how to explore our country, experience our culture, and gain a deeper appreciation for all that we have to offer. So let us introduce ourselves...

We're creative

We have a rich and vibrant history filled with struggle and the fight for equity, justice, emancipation and independence.  The saying we likkle but we tallawah (meaning "we may be small, but we are mighty") has long been an unofficial motto that speaks to our nation's resilient spirit.

Jamaica has given the world six unique genres of music. Reggae, Ska, Mento, Dancehall, Dub, and Rocksteady all originated here and our musicians have captivated the world with their melodies. From Toots Hibbert to Dennis Brown, Sean Paul to Beenie Man, the signature bass and thumping rhythms are the soundtrack to life on this colourful island. Lovers of music will enjoy our live music festivals, soundclashes, street dances, and music history tours.

We're flavourful

Confident, creative and magnetic, Jamaicans stand out wherever we go, buoyed by an unmatched level of national pride.  We’re exuberant and joyful, and love to enjoy the little things in life. We’re effervescent, creative and charismatic, with an energy that is felt worldwide - especially through our iconic cuisine.
